Avril Lavigne played to a sold-out crowd at the Highline Ballroom in New York City last night (Dec. 3), mixing up her set list with some rock classics and songs off her new self-titled album, which is out this month.

The intimate showcase in the small venue, called “The Avril Lavigne Experience” is all part of her comeback this year.

She’s spearheading the effort with her fifth studio album, announced in July. The one-night-only show included a full live set.

At 29, Lavigne is newly remarried to musician Chad Kroeger and has returned to her punk-rock roots. The Canadian singer burst onto the scene when she was just 17 in 2002 and captured wide attention with her edgy pop-punk skater sound.

Her debut album Let Go went six-times platinum, representing more than 6 million sales.

She was nominated for eight Grammy Awards, won seven Canadian Juno Awards, and sold more than 30 million albums and nearly 20 million tracks worldwide over the past eight years.

She drifted into more of a pop sound on her 2011 album Goodbye Lullaby, which failed to connect with her old fan base. It barely sold a million copies–not shabby, but it was far short of her three previous albums.

She doesn’t make that mistake with her new album. She says she is still all about putting “a middle finger to the sky and let ’em know that we’re still rock ‘n’ roll.”
