Gwen Stefani and Pharrell Williams, the newest coaches on NBC’s “The Voice,” gave a glimpse of what they’ll bring to the show last night (May 6) with a kickin’ rendition of Stefani’s 2004 hit, “Hollaback Girl.” The song has a lot of meaning for both.

The song appeared on Stefani’s debut solo album, Love. Angel. Music. Baby and Pharrell co-wrote it with her and Chad Hugo.

What’s more, the song was a light-hearted, but pointed jab at wacky rocker Courtney Love, who dismissed Stefani as a “cheerleader”
in an interview with Seventeen magazine.

‘It’s a song that says you don’t have to answer back,” Stefani told MTV News

Stefani, now 44, was struggling to come up with a song that would really capture the spirit of her solo album. After spending a week with Pharrell in a New York City Studio, the last song they cut was “Hollaback Girl.”

“We looked at each other when we wrote that song and we were like, ‘That’s it!’ It’s a song that says, you know, you don’t have to answer back. To me, it is the freshest attitude song I’ve heard in so long,” she said.

Gwen and Pharrell will officially join “The Voice” as judges in Season 7. Until then, check out their performance below, let us know your thoughts and follow TheImproper on Twitter for the latest music news.
