Selena Gomez told 20,000 students at a We Day event in Canada Wednesday (Oct. 22) that she knows what it’s like to be judged and put down and offered them some advice.

She urged them to follow the lead of her BFF Taylor Swift and to just “shake it off.”

The youth empowerment event, sponsored by Free the Children, also drew Nick Jonas, Orlando Bloom and singing duo, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis among other celebrities.

Selena’s message to the students was to focus on forgiveness if they encounter cyber bullying on the Internet.

“I know what it’s like to be judged and to be put down. I know what it’s like to have other people have opinions of you without knowing you,” she said Gomez.

“I want to say you are not defined by an Instagram photo, by a like, by a comment. That does not define you,” she said in a voice that was cracking at times.

“I want you guys to know that the trick is to focus on the love,” she added.

Her prescription she said is to “forgive” anyone who makes a rude comment and every person “that tries to hurt you personally or though the Internet.”

“There is so much love in this world, and in this stadium. Do not limit yourself because of what others expect,” she added.”

“Like my friend Taylor says, the haters are gonna hate. Just shake it off.”
