Lady Gaga dropped the high-concept themes that characterized previous videos and returned to her roots–the dance floor–for her new “Perfect Illusions” video. The dance tune has a hard-rock edge, and she tears it up stomping like a true punk rocker.

Gaga, 30, wears cut-off “Daisy Duke” jean shorts, and a cropped t-shirt. Bra-less, she edges close to a wardrobe malfunction more than once.

She also wears some kick ass boots as she shows off her newly toned body.

“The song is about modern ecstasy,” Gaga said at iHeartRadio’s Music Summit in New York in August. “We found our sweet, simple, ragey way of saying it.”

By “we,” she means well-known Brit producer Mark Ronson, who produced and co-wrote the song with Bloodpop and Kevin Parker of Tame Impala.

Andrea Gelardin and Ruth Hogben directed the video and Keely Gould produced it at SAV Studios.

Playing off the song’s title, Gaga is featured dancing alone in a barren desert and on a crowd dance floor at a club or possibly a rave, given the ecstasy reference.

That creates the sense of an illusion, but that’s as far as the video goes with high-concept production. It’s a stripped down performance video that showcase’s Gaga, eclectic, and ever evolving, musical style.

The song, which dropped Sept. 9, is the lead single off her new album, titled Joanne. It’s expected Oct. 21.
