UK singer Jesse J, fighting off comparisons to Katy Perry , released a new video for her song “Domino,” looking and sounding a lot like… Katy Perry?
Her debut album, Who You Are, was released in February and charted at number two on the UK albums chart. She won a Critic’s Choice BRIT Award, the UK equivalent of a Grammy, the same month and has been trying to raise her profile in the United States.
She performed “Domino,” at the MTV Video Music Awards and then on Simon Cowell’s “X Factor.” The 23-year-old singer, real name Jessica Ellen Cornish, also has solid song-writing credentials.
Before charting with her own songs, she wrote lyrics for Cris Brown and penned “Party in the U.S.A,” for Miley Cyrus.
Her debut album reached as high as No. 11 on the U.S. Charts, and she sparked Katy Perry comparisons after she opened for Perry’s California Dreams Tour earlier this year. The two share record labels.
“Domino,” her second US single, was released to radio in September. After the track stumbled in the UK, producer Dr. Luke stepped in and re-arranged the song with a thumping dance beat.
“Okay so my christmas gift to all my fans is… Is my next video!! THE #DOMINOVIDEO is going LIVE at MIDNIGHT #booooyyaaa #merrychristmas,” she wrote on Twitter.
Like Perry, Jessie favors bright, neon colored outfits and changes costumes at least a half a dozen times in the video.
Jesse has already hinted that she’s working on a second studio album. It’s slated for release next year, and she promises it will be harder-edged and darker.
“There’ll be a lot more pain in the lyrics on my next album,” she told the UK’s Daily Star.
“For the seven years before I signed my record deal I was in a bad place and I was scared that I couldn’t get out of it. That’s why I wrote such upbeat music, as a way of trying to escape how I felt.
“Now that I am happier, I won’t be afraid to explore my pain. But in a good way; it’ll be me saying that it’s OK not to feel OK. Not every song needs a happy ending,” she said.
