Rihanna Soars Skyward in New Single ‘Diamonds (in the Sky)’ (listen!)

Rihanna Soars Skyward in New Single 'Diamonds (in the Sky)' (listen!) 1Rihanna looks skyward for inspiration for her latest song, “Diamonds (in the Sky).” It’s a love ballad with a thumping bass set against piano and synthesizers. She implores her lover to “shine bright like a diamond.”

Almost every move the singer makes these days is interpreted by the trashier tabloids as some kind of gesture involving her ex-boyfriend Chris Brown.

It seems likely the same interpretation will be applied to this song. Although the title is also a play off The Beatles’ 1967 song “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds.” The song was widely interpreted to be about the drug LSD, although The Beatles denied it.

So maybe Rihanna is just singing to her blunt. Ironically, the cover art for the single shows Rihanna holding a rolling paper filled with diamonds. So we’re going to go with blunt instead of Chris Brown.

In any case, the song is expected to appear on her seventh studio album, which is as yet untitled. No track list has been release yet either, raising questions whether Rihanna will have the set finished by its expected release date in November.

“Diamonds” slows the electronic stomp of previous lead singles “Only Girl (In The World)” and “We Found Love,” “instead offering a lush, mid-tempo pool of synthesizers and Rihanna’s powerful pipes,” according to Billboard. Stargate and Benny Blanco are credited as producers.

Rihanna is expected to hit the road again next year in North America on what’s being bill as the “Diamonds” world tour. It launches March 8 in Buffalo, N.Y. During her last tour in Europe, the grueling pace and hard partying caused her to be hospitalized and forced the postponement of some shows.
